Cracking in Tablet

Definition: little, fine cracks ascertained on the higher and lower central surface of tablets, or terribly seldom on the sidewall area unit remarked as ‘Cracks’.

The causes and remedies of cracking associated with ‘Formulation’ (granulation).   

CAUSES:   
1.  Large size of granules.  
2.  Too dry granules.
3.  Tablets expand.
4.  Granulation too cold.
   
REMEDIES:
1.  Reduce grain size. Add fines.
2.  Moisten the granules correctly and add proper quantity of binder.
3.  Improve granulation. Add dry binders.
4.  Compress at temperature.

 The causes and remedies of cracking associated with ‘Machine’ (dies, punches and pill press).

CAUSES 
1.  Tablet expands on ejection as a result of air defense.
2.  Deep concavities cause cracking whereas removing tablets.
   
REMEDIES
1.  Use tapered die.
2   Use special take-off.
