pH

pH

What is pH?

pH/pOH is the negative logarithm of Hydrogen ion/Hydroxyl ion concentration, which measure the activity neutrality and alkalinity of a solution on a scale 0-14.
Mathematically , following -

                        pH = - log [ H+ ].
                        pOH = - log [OH+ ]

Why pH is important in pharmaceuticals?

pH is important in pharmaceuticals because some active ingredient is stable in one pH and degrades in another pH. So incase of product stability pH is an important factor.

 Determine the pH of 0.1 N HCl & 0.1 N NaOH :

Ans: The pH of 0.1 N Hydrochloride acids is calculated as follows
                   pH = - log [0.1]
                         = 1
The pH of 0.1 N Sodium Hydroxide is calculated as follows
                         pOH = - log [OH+ ]
                                  = 1
               Again,  pH = 14.0 -pOH
                                 = 14.0 –1.0
